Illegal gambling FBI raid in Wilder sparks community outrage for ‘excessive force’

The FBI, together with a number of enforcement agencies, raided an illegal gambling operation in Wilder, Idaho.
Four men have been arrested as part of an operation involving around 200 law enforcement personnel on October 19. A federal search warrant was served, carried out by federal, state, and local agencies to address a suspected illegal gambling operation in Wilder, Idaho.

The investigation was initiated by the Salt Lake City FBI’s Boise Resident Agency, collaborating with the Treasure Valley Metro Violent Crime and Gang Task Force. It uncovered an illegal gambling business at a horse track on a property called La Cathedral Arena in Wilder, leading to the arrests of four individuals.
“Illegal gambling isn’t a victimless crime,” said Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls of the Salt Lake City FBI. “These operations can create an increase in violent crime, drug activity, and violence, putting communities at risk. I’m grateful for the collaboration and partnerships on the federal, state, and local level. Together, we’re working to keep our communities safe.”
Among those taken into custody and charged with federal complaints were 37-year-old Ivan Tellez, 37-year-old Samuel Bejarano, 39-year-old Dayana Fajardo, and 56-year-old Alejandro Estrada. However, reports from those in attendance said that rubber bullets were used against those in the vicinity, including women and children.

Wilder illegal gambling raid by FBI sparks outrage in the community
According to reports shared by the ACLU Idaho, law enforcement agencies employed “excessive uses of force” in their operations. Concerns have been raised that the treatment of those at the scene was overblown, with reports of rubber bullets being fired and people as young as 12 years old being placed in handcuffs.
The father of one of those arrested and the owner of the establishment, Andrés Téllez Juárez, told Idaho News that he was handcuffed for five hours and that the authorities “abused their powers”.
“Children, adults, people who just came to have fun, to relax a little after a week of work – they abused their power with them,” he said. “They brought in 12 and 13-year-old kids in handcuffs, women 70 to 80 years old were handcuffed.
“I was kindly asking them to loosen the handcuffs for some people because their hands were already swollen… and they’d just laugh or say things like, ‘You’re okay. You’re okay,’ and then push them.”
Such raids from the FBI are not unusual, nor are collaborations between partner agencies. However, ICE is not typically involved with all federal gambling investigations.

AWS outage disrupts gambling sites and sportsbooks ahead of Monday Night Football

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage disrupted services around the world, including for gambling sites ahead of Monday Night Football.
An ‘operational issue’ at AWS has caused knock-on outages for various online services, across social media like Snapchat and Roblox, banking apps around the world, and even institutions like the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority, HMRC. In the world of gambling, betting apps and sportsbooks were also affected, leaving users unable to withdraw funds or place bets in some cases.
That includes some gambling giants like FanDuel and DraftKings, with both taking to social media to alert users of the issues.
“We are aware that users are currently having trouble logging in and fully accessing our platform,” wrote FanDuel on X at 9:38am (ET) on October 20. “Our team is actively investigating and working toward resolution. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience in the meantime.”

Good morning. We are aware that users are currently having trouble logging in and fully accessing our platform. Our team is actively investigating and working toward resolution. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience in the meantime.

The company continued to update users about the progress in returning services to normal throughout the day, as issues were gradually resolved in different regions. By 11:31pm (ET) the same day, FanDuel reported that all sportsbook platforms were now live again.
DraftKings was similarly affected, although seemingly to a lesser degree. The company’s statement and user reports showed that the outage seemed to largely affect withdrawals, rather than preventing access to the sportsbook entirely.

Good morning everyone!
Please note that some withdrawals are still slow to process due to the outage overnight. We appreciate the patience!

Gambling fans react to the AWS outage
The outage couldn’t have come at a worse time for sports bettors, with it disrupting people’s access to gambling services in the lead-up to Monday Night Football. October 20 saw the San Francisco 49ers go up against the Atlanta Falcons, but those who couldn’t get onto FanDuel, DraftKings, or their other app of choice were unable to withdraw funds for previously placed bets or see their bets reflected online.
This led to uncertainty and a lack of confidence in placing bets, with this NFL season expected to see $30 billion of spending on gambling in the US. Users were quick to share their frustrations on social media, as well as wondering whether gambling operators would honor bets that fans were unable to alter during the outage.
“Will Fanduel honor my bets?” wrote one user on reddit. “I can see the transactions but not the slips.”

“I just have $200 nowhere right now,” complained another. “My bet isn’t there and my money is gone.”

The outage appears to have ended now, and all services should have returned to normal. ReadWrite has contacted AWS, FanDuel, and DraftKings for comment.

Tribal coalition joins Robinhood lawsuit in Massachusetts gaming regulation battle

A coalition of tribal governments and gaming associations has decided to get involved in the ongoing legal fight between trading platform Robinhood Derivatives, LLC and the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. They argue that the case could have major effects on tribal sovereignty and how gaming is regulated across the country.
In a filing submitted on Thursday (October 16) and reviewed by ReadWrite, the Indian Gaming Association, the National Congress of American Indians, and six other tribal organizations, along with 17 federally recognized tribes, filed an amicus curiae brief in support of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell.

The momentum in the Kalshi lawsuits began to turn in the States’ favor in Maryland. 2 key reasons: (1) MD’s focus on Kalshi’s prior judicial stmts got judge’s attention & opened door to supp briefing; and (2) the Tribes joining forces w/ MD. The group said they share “a strong interest in this case because of its potential to have a significant impact on their or their member tribes’ sovereign rights regarding gaming on Indian lands.”
Robinhood filed its lawsuit against the MGC and Campbell after Campbell brought a state court case against Kalshi, which powers the prediction markets hub. The earlier case claimed Kalshi’s sports event contracts broke Massachusetts gaming laws. Since Robinhood offers Kalshi’s sports-related contracts on its trading platform, it responded by filing its own federal lawsuit, arguing that the state’s actions put its business at risk.
Tribal group accuses Robinhood of impeding on sovereign rights in Massachusetts
The tribal brief accuses Robinhood of having “unlawfully and unfairly entered into the gaming market,” arguing that its “so-called sports event contracts” are “expressly prohibited by the [Commodity Exchange Act] and Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s own regulations.” The brief warns that by operating under the guise of commodity trading, Robinhood “impedes tribes’ inherent sovereign right to regulate gaming activity on Indian lands.”
The tribes argue that any sports betting that takes place on tribal land falls under the authority of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, or IGRA. “Indian tribes are sovereign nations with primary jurisdiction over their lands and the activities occurring on their lands,” the brief states, adding that “both the United States Supreme Court and Congress have recognized tribes’ inherent and exclusive sovereign right to conduct and regulate gaming on their Indian lands.”
They asked the court to deny Robinhood’s request for a preliminary injunction and to throw out the lawsuit entirely. It argues that Robinhood’s interpretation of federal law “would represent unheralded power for the CFTC and private entities to authorize gaming on Indian lands under a long-extant statute,” a position the tribes say goes against decades of established law and threatens economic stability.
The brief adds that Robinhood’s activities “constitute Class III gaming” under IGRA and that “each bet Robinhood facilitates on Indian lands violates IGRA, undermines tribal sovereignty, and reduces tribal gaming revenue and government funding.”
