New York’s Citi Field casino becomes fourth proposal to advance to the next stage

Mets owner Steve Cohen and Hard Rock’s proposed casino at Citi Field in Queens have stepped forward to the final stage of the license process.
That brings the total number of New York casino proposals at this stage up to four, having all received approvals from their respective Community Advisory Committees. As well as the Citi Field location, the others at this stage are Genting Group’s Resorts World New York City, MGM Resorts’ MGM Empire City and Bally’s Bronx casino.
The Citi Field proposal gained the backing of a US Senator, with John Liu seeing potential in the $8 billion project that would see a casino being built next to Citi Field. The space involved is currently 50 acres of empty parking lots that would be transformed via the privately funded project into space dubbed Metropolitan Park.
The plan is to have 25 acres of new public park space, along with a Queens Food Hall, a Hard Rock Hotel, and a casino with bars, restaurants, and a sportsbook. It’s estimated that the proposal would generate around 23,000 local jobs, with a view to ingratiating itself with the local Queens community.
The path to a New York casino license
Other proposals that have been officially rejected include proposals regarding The Coney, Mohegan, Caesars, and Rush Street Gaming. While there are four proposals remaining, there are only three casino licenses available to be handed out, with a decision expected by December 1.
As it stands, Genting and MGM have been thought to be the most likely to be expected, with infrastructures already in place with existing racinos for both of them. That leaves one further place still up for grabs, of course, but the lengthy decision-making process on the future of New York’s casinos is finally drawing to a close.

Spain reveals plans for centralized monitoring for deposit limits in player protection push

The Directorate General of Gambling in Spain (DGOJ) has outlined plans to improve player protections through centralized monitoring controls.
These will be integrated into the digital requirements of Spanish online gambling licenses. It comes after the DGOJ renewed its certification with the Spanish government services and agencies. The plan is part of a wider project to deploy a centralized monitoring system to track player activity across the industry.
Since 2022, Spanish gambling license holders have self-managed deposit limits themselves, at a limit of €600 a day. Under the new system, the DGOJ will be able to verify each customer deposit in line with individual licenses. These will be set at €600 per day, €1,500 per week, and €3,000 per month.
Although the system is yet to be put to the test, the DGOJ believes that it will make it easier for customers to reduce individual limits, possibly with new self-limiting tools. Licensees, or operators, will need to remind customers of their right to limit deposits and the time spent on platforms every time they log in.
Gambling user protection in Spain
Following on from a closer look at Spanish gambling regulations earlier in the year, this latest proposal is part of the DGOJ’s latest push to better protect Spanish gambling consumers. It comes alongside the launch of a new Federal Self-Exclusion Scheme for those at risk of gambling-related harm and plans for an AI algorithm to trace 60 variables that could indicate greater risk.
The AI program will be able to track real-time patterns linked to problem gambling behaviour and enable operators to intervene in dangerous patterns early, as well as offer those who need it access to the treatment they need. These measures, combined with the planned centralized system, are thought to better protect Spanish gamblers.

Norsk Tipping slapped with another fine after lottery draw error

Gambling operator Norsk Tipping has been slapped with another fine for errors made in the Norwegian Supertrekning lottery draw.
Norsk Tipping is facing its second fine for its Supertrekning (Superdraw) lottery errors, now amounting to 25 million kroner ($2.5 million USD). This follows a previous 46 million kroner ($4.5 million) fine after an error was found that saw 52 incorrect winners take home prizes worth 1 million kroner ($100,000) in an Easter weekend draw earlier this year.
The Superdraw takes place four times a year. Ahead of the Easter draw on April 19, Norsk Tipping deleted those who had submitted entries for Christmas and New Year. Lottstift considered pulling the draw after suspecting this error, but the draw went ahead under the assurance from Norsk Tipping that it would be carried out correctly. Even after the draw went through, Norsk Tipping maintained that everything had been done correctly, but Lottstift later investigated further and found the opposite.
“It is reprehensible that Norsk Tipping could state that the Supertrekning was correctly carried out, despite the fact that it was not checked that all who had bought tickets participated in the draw,” said Tore Bell, director of the department at the Gambling Authority. “This is liable to undermine trust in the company.”
What’s next for Norsk Tipping?
The gambling operator now has three weeks to comment before a final decision is made on the fine. It erodes public and industry trust in the brand, after a series of errors have plagued the company throughout the year.
Norsk Tipping was at the center of a regulatory investigation earlier this year, resulting in a fine and for the former CEO to step down from the role.
“All of these cases make it crucial that Norsk Tipping sharpens its routines, controls and the quality of what it does,” Bell said. “Therefore, we have announced a larger inspection this autumn where we will look at Lotto, Eurojackpot and Vikinglotto.”

Florida Gaming Control Commission raids two illegal gambling spots in Fort Myers

The Florida Gaming Control Commission raided two suspected illegal gambling spots in Fort Meyers this week.
On Tuesday, September 20, the FGCC completed two raids on suspected illegal gambling spots in Fort Meyers, with search warrants for two properties: Spin City Arcade on Reflection Parkway and Gold Rush on Cypress Lake Drive. The operation was nicknamed ‘Gold Rush Spin and Repeat’ and resulted in the seizure of 109 illegal slot machines and $94,493 in cash.
The FGCC also told Fox 4 that Stamenia Gacevic and Kelsey Jean Russell were issued a Notices to Appear. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the operation.
“I appreciate Sheriff Carmine Marceno and the deputies who assisted with today’s warrants,” said L. Carl Herold, Director of Gaming Enforcement at the FGCC. “Their coordination helped ensure a safe and effective operation.”
Cracking down on illegal gambling in Florida
Florida law regulates gambling in all forms and slot machines are only permitted in licensed gaming facilities. That makes it illegal to operate slot machines or other unauthorized gambling machines at any unlicensed facility, as the two facilities raided in Fort Meyers are suspected to have been doing.
“Illegal casinos put players at real risk,” Herold explained. “These unregulated machines offer no consumer protections, no verified payout standards, and no reliable recourse when people are harmed. They can attract criminal activity, exploit vulnerable residents, and siphon dollars from lawful, regulated gaming that supports jobs and public programs. If you see slot machines outside authorized locations, walk away and report it.”
Florida authorities have been cracking down on such operations, with recent raids seizing cash and suspected illegal machines. A conviction for the act of illegal gambling is classed as a second-degree misdemeanor and can lead to punishments of up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Sportsbook Midnite receives $100m credit financing deal to grow in the UK

Sportsbook and casino operator Midnite has received a credit financial deal worth up to $100m to support growth in the UK market.
The financing deal for Midnite, worth up to $100 million, was secured from House Advantage Fund (HAF), with a view for the sportsbook and casino operator to keep growing in the UK iGaming market. The company has goals to become a tier-1 operator.
Specifically, Midnite intends to use the funds to build a cash reserve for non-marketing investments, using them to invest in hiring and product development without impacting top-line revenue. The goal is to scale at speed, without cutting into revenue and profit.
“This partnership allows us to triple down on both performance and brand marketing campaigns, while preserving cash for innovation and expansion.” said Nicholas Wright, Midnite’s Chief Executive Officer. “The flexibility of the House Advantage structure means we can pursue our long-term strategy with greater conviction and fewer trade-offs.
“This arrangement also signifies the strength of the partnership Midnite has with Discerning Capital. The confidence the team has in what we are doing at Midnite allows us to strive for continued growth and execute our strategy to disrupt the gaming industry for good.”
HAF is a specialised user acquisition financing strategy, with funds provided by Discerning Capital, a Las Vegas-based growth capital investment firm with history and experience in the regulated gambling and gaming sectors. The firm had already led Midnite’s Series B funding round earlier this year.
“For too long, the growth trajectory of online wagering operators has been constrained by the limitations of traditional venture capital or credit, which is hard to obtain across the broader gaming ecosystem,” said Davis Catlin, Managing Partner at Discerning Capital. “By tying capital deployment to actual marketing performance, we unlock sustainable, aggressive scale without forcing operators into unnecessary equity dilution or onerous repayment structures. This credit facility for Midnite sets a new benchmark for how ambitious firms in our sector can finance growth.”
Rapid growth for Midnite
In April 2025, Midnite closed a successful round of series B funding that ended up being worth $10 million. As noted above, the funding round was led by Discerning Capital, alongside the Raine Group, Play Ventures, Venrex, and Big Bets. The total capital raised was more than $35 million.
Midnite has also been securing UK-specific sponsorships as part of its plans to grow in the region, including partnering with soccer teams and becoming an official UK partner in snooker.
