AGA issues statement on FBI illegal gambling probe involving NBA stars

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has spoken out after more than 30 people have been arrested in an illegal gambling crackdown by the FBI.
On Thursday (October 23), we reported that Miami Heat player Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups had been arrested and named by federal prosecutors in two separate indictments.
The 31-year-old basketballer was arrested over alleged betting irregularities, amongst other people, while Billups is one of 31 people charged in a separate illegal poker game case involving retired players and the mafia, according to court documents. Both men deny the allegations. It was revealed that Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James’s injury information may have been used by a fellow player to give bettors an advantage.
It was on Thursday when Rozier appeared in federal court in Orlando, Florida, and was arrested on bail. Billups was arrested in Portland, Oregon.
What has the AGA said about the FBI gambling probe into several NBA stars?
Now, the AGA which is a national trade group that represents the U.S. gaming industry, has issued a statement. The president and CEO, Bill Miller, said: “Today’s revelations are a stark reminder of the pervasive and predatory illegal market, ensnaring countless individuals and operating in the shadows.
“It is important to recognize that the regulated legal market delivers transparency, oversight, and collaboration with authorities that assists in bringing these bad actors to light.”

He went on to praise the word of the authorities: “Today, we applaud the work of the FBI, the NYPD, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Eastern District of New York, and reiterate the legal gaming industry’s commitment to integrity and collaboration with regulators, leagues, and law enforcement.
“We will continue to work closely with all partners to eliminate illegal gambling and uphold the public’s trust in the games we love.”
The NBA have said that Rozier and Billups were being placed on immediate leave, while it reviews the federal indictments.
“We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority,” it said.

FBI uncovers NBA sports gambling scheme using LeBron James injury info

Bettors received LeBron James’ injury information according to documents linked to a major FBI investigation into illegal gambling involving several NBA stars.
As part of the sweeping arrests and legal action that have resulted from the news rocking the basketball world, new developments are coming to light as more details are made public.
One of those details is the confidential injury information of superstar legendary player James, and how bettors gained this to their advantage.
FBI NBA gambling case reveals James’ injury info used by bettors
As we reported, the FBI’s illegal betting case involving Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA star Damon Jones has taken over sports news.
Thirty-one people, including the three named NBA individuals, have been charged as described by the Justice Department in a major press event.
The aforementioned Jones, who was mentioned in the FBI report as “D Jones” and “Dee Jones” in confidential texts and correspondence, is reportedly the primary individual responsible for leaking injury information on multiple occasions.
It is alleged that Jones, “On multiple occasions during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 NBA seasons, including as early as approximately December 2022, Jones sold or attempted to sell for profit non-public information to others.”
The indictment document refers to James specifically as “Player 4,” who was “an individual whose identity is known to the Grand Jury, was one of the Lakers’ best players during the 2023-2024 NBA season.”
Jones is said to have texted accomplices to share data before a January 15, 2024 match against the Oklahoma City Thunder, saying, “Hit me asap got one for u dude say he got some info,” to defendant Eric Earnest, who then would share this with another defendant, Marves Fairley.
Fairley then sent “$2,500 through an intermediary, via a peer-to-peer mobile payment platform, accompanied by the message: “fee,” said the court documents.
Fairley gambles on Jones’ information
Fairley would then go on to use the information to inform multiple bets, including a $100,000 wager against the Lakers winning. James was updated to “probable” on the injury report and took to the court for his average minutes, with the Lakers winning the match. At the time, James had been ruled out due to ankle soreness.
At the conclusion of the match, Fairley texted Jones and demanded that the $2,500 “fee” be repaid to him.
Jones was also highlighted to have given confidential information about an injury to an individual known as “Player 3” on February 9, 2023, in a match-up with the Milwaukee Bucks. According to reports, Player 3 has been identified as Anthony Davis.
Jones then texted a message to accomplices, “Get a big bet on Milwaukee tonight before the information is out!” The Bucks would win the game, and Player 3 would not feature.
The former NBA player now faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, according to the documentation provided by the FBI.

FBI reveals NBA gambling scandal: every game listed in DOJ report

All of the matches that are relevant to the FBI’s illegal gambling probe have been published by the Justice Department.
The list of fixtures narrows down the dates and time frames of the NBA seasons that were, until now, unknowingly preyed upon by an alleged illegal gambling ring.
Every game listed in the FBI probe into illegal gambling involving NBA stars
The Justice Department published the games as part of a wider statement titled “Current and Former National Basketball Association Players and Four Other Individuals Charged in Widespread Sports Betting and Money Laundering Conspiracy.”
As we reported, three key names out of the thirty individuals charged included Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA star Damon Jones.
“This investigation exposed a gambling ring built around the NBA, where players and associates allegedly used inside information and even faked injuries to fraudulently manipulate bets on games,” said Jessica S. Tisch, Commissioner, New York City Police Department (NYPD).
Billups and Rozier have been placed on indefinite leave as a consequence of the FBI publishing the report that dates back to the 2022 season.

It was during these games that the actions of Eric Earnest, Marves Fairley, Shane Hennen, Damon Jones, Deniro Laster, and Terry Rozier would be most shocking to the basketball world as the authorities listed their many breaches.
March 23, 2023 – Charlotte Hornets V Atlanta Hawks
Rozier had pre-planned that he would leave the court early and informed Laster, Fairley, and Hennen. Rozier exited the game in the ninth minute, and this “confidential information to place and direct more than $200,000 in wagers” would net the cabal tens of thousands of dollars.
March 24, 2023 – Portland Trail Blazers V Chicago Bulls
Laster would be in touch with a member of the Trailblazers’ coaching staff who had advised him confidentially that most of the bigger names would be sitting out against the Bulls. Laster then used the information to bet heavily on the Bulls and make a hefty profit, said the Justice Department.
April 6, 2023 – Orlando Magic V Cleveland Cavaliers
Fairley gathered information from a person connected to an Orlando Magic player, and he and a co-conspirator learned that the Magic would not be playing their usual starting lineup.
He placed an $11,000 bet on the Cavaliers beating their projected points spread, and the Magic were beaten by 24 points on the night.
February 9, 2023, and January 15, 2024 – Los Angeles Lakers games vs. Milwaukee Bucks and Oklahoma City Thunder
As we reported, both of these games revolved around Jones and his proximity to key confidential team information in the Lakers’ locker room.
The report stated he funneled this “insider information to co-conspirators about pre-release medical information concerning star players on the Los Angeles Lakers for the purpose of enabling the co-conspirators to place wagers based on this information
January 26, 2024, and March 20, 2024 – Toronto Raptors games vs. Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento Kings
Jontay Porter, then a Raptors player, informed a co-conspirator, Long Phi Pham, that he would exit both of these games early. This allowed those with this information, including Henen and Fairley, to bet the “under” line on Porter’s statistics.
Both Pham and Porter have pleaded guilty at an earlier time to their involvement in the betting scandal and the role they played.
“The fact that some players altered their performance or took themselves out of games to ensure these bets paid out is an offense to every player and fan,” concluded Tisch.
